Industrikraft is an initiative by leading Swedish industrial companies aimed at providing the industry's perspective on designing a robust energy system in Sweden. The goal is to ensure reliable delivery of fossil-free electricity at competitive prices, while also evaluating potential future investments in electricity production to enable the electrification of industry. The expansion of Sweden's energy system is critical for achieving our climate goals.
A fossil-free, stable, and competitive energy system is essential for Sweden to remain a leading industrial nation.
A fossil-free, stable, and competitive energy system is essential for Sweden to remain a leading industrial nation. For the first time in 30 years, a large number of Sweden's leading industrial companies have come together to engage in a more systematic dialogue with the government to secure the energy needs of industry today and in the decades to come, driven by the growing and necessary electrification.
Industrikraft's Role
Industrikraft’s role is to help address the energy policy challenge of designing a system that meets the needs of industry. This is particularly urgent in light of the rapid transition taking place and the uncertainties surrounding the availability and adoption of new technologies, future demand trends, financing, and price developments. As part of its mission, Industrikraft is conducting analytical work to determine how the system should be designed and secured—leveraging the broad experience and perspectives of its industrial stakeholders.
Industrikraft should be regarded as an active and concrete partner in the development and implementation of political ambitions to secure sufficient electricity supply now and in the future.
The competitiveness of Swedish industry has historically been built on a stable and sustainable electricity system with low prices. The transition from fossil-based to fossil-free electricity production, driven by nuclear power expansion in the 1970s, further strengthened this position. Over the past 40 years, electricity consumption has remained relatively stable, with hydropower and nuclear power accounting for 80% of the electricity supply.
In recent years, wind and solar power have been added, bringing climate benefits but also challenges that have affected prices, distribution, and usage. The need for energy storage and greater flexibility has grown, but progress has lagged, hindered by high costs and a lack of sustainable business models.
Industrikraft was founded in the summer of 2024 by Alfa Laval, Boliden, SKF, Stora Enso, and the Volvo Group. In the autumn of 2024, additional equal shareholders joined: ABB, AFRY, Alleima, Billerud, Epiroc, Hitachi Energy, Höganäs, SAAB, Södra, Vectura, and Volvo Cars.
